GHGSat describes itself as “a global GHG emissions monitoring company delivering independent greenhouse gas insights through the world’s largest dedicated satellite constellation and advanced aircraft sensors.” It says its “facility-level data and analytics help operators protect revenue, improve asset performance, and enable governments to design effective, evidence-based climate and energy policy.” Its own history records that founder Stéphane Germain saw the measurement gap as “a solvable engineering problem” — to “Miniaturize a high-resolution gas detection sensor into a microsatellite that could measure precisely” — and that “In 2016, GHGSat launched Claire—the world’s first commercial satellite for greenhouse gas emissions monitoring from space”, complemented from 2022 by “aircraft carrying the same patented sensor”.

Satellite methane monitoring at scale across ExxonMobil onshore operations in Canada, the US, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, feeding ExxonMobil's COMET tracking center (2025).
